**Philip is a given name, derived from the Greek Φίλιππος (Philippos), meaning "friend of horses", from φίλος (philos) meaning "friend, beloved, dear"[1] and ἵππος (hippos) "horse".[2][3][4] A common mistake is to translate the name as "lover of horses", but the word φίλος although it could also mean "lover", in this case is wrong translated. While the literal translation, in Ancient Greece, the ownership of horses was available only to those rich enough to afford them. Since beauty, wealth, and nobility were all synonymous, "lover of horses" can also be translated as "noble". Philip has alternative spellings: Phillip, Philippe, Philipp, Phillipp, Felip, Felipe, Filip, Filippo, Filippu, Filipe, Filype, Phélyp, Phylip, Phillep, Pilib, Fülöp, Fulup, and has the diminutive (or hypocoristic form) Phil, Phill, Filep, Flip, Philly, Pippo or Pip.
