Dear Filep and iDEALS, Can Haute Couture be Made in China, can Made in China be Haute Couture ? Let me take you behind the scenes at the Laurence Xu aw1314 show and then you will decide. Showing for the 1st time in Paris where he resides, the Chinese couturier seeks to create a link between past and future, the mystical Chinese Empire's tradition & heritage and the modern style, East and West.
He likes to mix Chinese style and western elements. Called "Xiuqiu" (embroidered ball in Chinese), the collection takes us on a journey through tradition and folklore highly inspired by ancient paintings, Laurence Xu pays a homage to his homeland handicrafts and 4.000 year old techniques with hand-making and embroidery aplenty. Colours are flamboyant, materials rich, patterns intricate and contrasts intense. Gowns mix brocade and feathers, crocodile and lace, silk and sequins.
The famous Chinese opera artist Li Yu Gang performed some of his art to open the show thus reinforcing the link with tradition, while Taiwanese actress & singer Pace Wu walked in the final look. So, what's your opinion now : can Haute Couture be Made in China, can Made in China be Haute Couture ? I say yes.
