Fashion has always been a way of expressing herself, a passion, an art, a mirror for herself and society. Her video clips, art work and performances reflect the zeitgeist of innovative designers, including Helmut Lang, Maison Martin Margiela, Olivier Theyskens and A.F. Vandevorst.
And stories she has... about creation, cooperation, commitment, recognition, aesthetics and all her delicious anecdotes about garments during recordings, shoots and her life. Axelle is passionate about many pieces in her wardrobe, such as the tabi-shoes by Martin Margiela, the various jumpsuits and the hats by Elvis Pompillio that have been ever-present since her career began. Her style inspires; the cowboy hat may remind us of Madonna on the cover of her Confessions on a Dance Floor album, but that was years after Axelle had presented this look for her album, Face A-Face B.
In addition to her wardrobe, photography and visual language as a whole also form a visual memory for Axelle's career. She carefully selects the talented photographers, artists and collaborators whom she admires to illustrate and help present her work. These encounters have led to friendships with, for example, graphic designer Paul Ritter, who is based in New York and will be working on this exhibition.
As is the case with her music, here too, Axelle Red is not afraid to cross the universe to work with the very best.
All the photographers with whom she has worked are authorities in their field. They include Giorgia Kokolis, Jan Welters, Melodie McDaniel, Sylvie Lancrenon, Alex Salinas, Serge Leblon, Kurt Stallaert, Annette Aurell, Vincent Soyez, Nicol’ Andrea and Glen Luchford, to name a few. Axelle Red: Fashion Victim tells the very personal story of this passionate relationship.
The Fashion Museum of Hasselt and Axelle Red have asked Didier Vervaeren, artistic director, stylist and lecturer at La Cambre, to assist her in this project, along with Paul Ritter, Jean François Pinto and Véronique Leroy.
