Dear iDEALS, its Sunday afternoon and I find myself on my mom's sofa, exited to watch a documentary I just bought, titled "SMASH HIS CAMERA", a film centering on the life and work of Ron Galella that examines the nature and effect of paparazzi as well as his obsession with Jackie Onassis as his "subject" (in the film he describes her as his "girlfriend") as well as other stories featuring Hollywood stars between the years 1960-1990.
There is plenty to see in this fabulous documentary, directed by Leon Gast, that makes it fascinating from beginning to end. All the stars are respectfully represented in an intriguing way and in most cases makes you want to know who they are (I know them all of course).
As my interest for Ron Galella grows further, I am happy to discover of a book publication, announced to be released in November 2012.
"Launching November 2012, Jackie: My Obsession is a sequel of sorts to Ron's first title, Jacqueline (1976), but the difference is that this book keeps in line with Galella’s more recent photo book releases. Here the emphasis is placed squarely on Ron's photographs of Jackie and the Kennedys, where Jacqueline was more of an autobiographical entry. To that end, Jackie: My Obsession is a 12.5x14", 400-page, gilded masterpiece, with beautiful, heavy stock that contains many never-before-published images. Rounding out the book are written contributions by Matthias Harder, Chief Curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation, and Valentino, along with quotes from various sources, including Michael Kors, Andy Warhol, and Tom Ford. Two editions are currently being produced: a standard edition of 2300, with a white, canvas-bound hardcover, and hits of gold foil; and a very limited slip-cased edition of 200 that includes a signed and numbered 11x14" print of the cover image—Ron's famous Windblown Jackie."
