Dear iDEALS, Tom Ford is known for putting Gucci back on track and for taking over YSL right after Yves Saint Laurent himself. Also he made clear that he loves art (in a fine documentary about Jeff Koons), that he loves sex, drama and glamour and that he is capable of bringing out a series of perfumes that turn every skin to an object of desire.
The time has come for Mr Ford to sign a movie as a director. "A single Man" is his first film and starring actor Colin Firth just won best man for his performance at the Venice Film Festival yesterday.
I would be a liar not to admit how intrigued I am and also how certain I feel that this is Firth's best performance ever in his entire career. The story is about George Falconer, a British college professor who is struggling to find meaning in his life after the death of his long-time partner, Jim .
He is consoled by his closest friend Charley, a 48-year-old beauty played by Julianne Moore, and is stalked by one of his students, Kenny.
What makes this film a true experience of the senses is the fact that the whole project is a melting pot of perfect lights, make-up, costumes, editing, photography, props, music, the carefully selected and truly sophisticated choice of cast.
Director : Tom Ford (designer de Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent)
Actors : Colin Firth , Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult
The Coppa Volpi for "Best Actor" went to Colin Firth for his performance.
